Taking care of our animals is a big part of life at Plantation.  Here is a chance for you to meet a few of them.

Goats

Both of our goats are purebred Nubians.  They come from a farm in Sebastopol.

topazTopaz

She came in the Spring of '07.  Her first year she gave birth to triplets and she repeated that this year.  Here she is with her three kids who are just hours old. She gave us two bucks called Jasper and Blinken, as well as a doe called Opal.

Onyx

Onyx

She just came to the farm in the Spring of '08.  As you can tell she is very friendly and actually likes to give "kisses". Nubians are known for their docial demeanor as well as a high butterfat content and milk production.

Cows

Daphne and LuluDairy Cows

We now house two dairy cows.  Daphne is a four year ols Guernsey, here for her first full year and Lulu is her yearling calf born in July 2007.  Guernsey's are very friendly milkers and produce milk with a high butterfat content.

Beef cow

Beef Cows

Our two beef cattle include a Hereford and a Black Angus/Hereford cross.  These are two of the most common beef breeds in the area.  Angus cattle are easy clavers and provide a particularly nice meat.  Herefords are large and muscular and boast a nice disposition, which make them great for kids to be around.

Chickens

We have quite an array of layers in our coop.  These breeds include Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Rocks, Anconas, Araucona, Polish, Dominiques, and Sultans.  We also have some flashier exhibit breeds of chickens like the Silkies and Cochins.  They too lay eggs but are apart of our flock largely because of their interesting appearance.
