Why Plantation is Special

Many good summer camps provide a safe environment for campers to have fun in the outdoors.  At Plantation, our goal is to go beyond that and to create a magical place in a child’s life.  This magic comes in creating a wondrous place where each camper can have of the most fun, the best friends, the happiest times each of them has experienced.  And those experiences are carried with them throughout the year and then into their life as they grow up, face new challenges and accomplish all that they imagine.

So, why is Plantation Farm Camp unique?

• Complete camp experience -- Campers all arrive together and leave together.  The length of the sessions give time to get settled, become comfortable, and then to explore new things.  This complete experience strengthens the bonds or among people and creates unity in the community.  Our coherent community provides a high level of security for campers to make strong relationships, build their self-confidence, and explore new challenges.
• Life unplugged -- Everyone lives outdoors without electricity.  We eat on a beautiful arbor-cover patio.  The only music is from our voices and the guitars or during our weekly barn dance.  In today's high-pressure world everyone, especially children, needs a chance to be away from all kinds of personal electronics to have quiet and down time to process.
• Farm life, living green -- We are a sustainable farm year-round.  Campers are an integral part of the organic garden and taking care of the animals.  Growing our own food gives each camper the experience of eating local, slow food.  Every day we enjoy the bounty that is raised in the garden or grass-fed in the pastures.
• Integrated community, as an individual -- Plantation emphasizes building a strong community of self-reliant individuals.  Each individual's talents and unique spirit are celebrated as we enrich each other's lives.  The supportive environment fosters the development of social skills that benefit a camper in everything they do.
• Multi age -- Living units are arranged by age, but meals and activities are integrated.  This gives children of all ages the chance to learn from one another, mentor others, and develop skills at their own pace.

Plantation’s spirit can be seen in the children’s proud faces when they build an ox cart, or serve fresh vegetables they helped to harvest. Living on a farm reinforces our belief in the importance of fundamental values and offers us a measure of stability and inner connectedness in our changing world. While today’s children are surrounded by technology, a summer at Plantation allows campers the opportunity to live outdoors in an environment that truly uses a minimum of technology. Gaining knowledge and appreciation of nature is one benefit. Equally important is that children benefit year-round from the time they have had to relax, process, and integrate what they learn in school.
